THE COLORADO ASSOCIATION OF THE DEAF (C.A.D.)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
C.A.D. APPOINTS A NEW GENERAL OFFICER
Denver, CO -- 1 June 2011 / The Colorado Association of the Deaf (CAD) announces the appointment of Julie Moers as the new general officer. She begins her duties on 20 June 2011.
Educated at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, Rochester Institute of Technology, New York, Julie Moers has 12+ years experience working with adults and children and with public and private organizations ranging from Hewlett-Packard to Vocational Rehabilitation
to Rocky Mountain Deaf School. Julie and her husband, Cliff, have four children.
She will pull together the scattered obligations of the CAD, and begin to develop a 5-year strategic plan. According to various sources, there are an estimated 4,000 to 38,000 deaf Coloradans.
Editor David Anthony of The Deaf Coloradan monthly notes: "Julie is an ideal person to serve in this capacity. She is a real conciliatory go-getter.
Her many accomplishments include being a member of the Rocky Mountain Deaf School’s small visionary founding team, and previously serving as vice president of the CAD. As far as we know, the CAD may be the only state association of the deaf with a paid administrator."
The mission of the CAD, a non-profit, tax-exempt entity dedicated to the welfare of the deaf in Colorado, established in 1904 by George W Veditz, is to promote, advance, and enhance the status of deaf Coloradans in all area of life: Educational, vocational, recreational, social, and spiritual. The CAD vision statement reads: "Every deaf Coloradan shall be the equal of every non-deaf citizen of our state."

As you might know, the word “pageant” kind of sends the wrong image of what
“Miss Deaf America Ambassador” is all about or sends away the donators and the
motivated young ladies. The term “pageant”, however, in the dictionary is described as
a beauty contest.
The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) had been debating how to attract the young
ladies to participate because it is also the beginning point of a journey as an ambassador, not just outer beauty alone. As we all know, inner beauty is what makes us beautiful on the outside.
An ambassador is as the dictionary describes: a diplomatic official of the highest rank, sent by one state to another as its representative. In other word, it means a person who has leadership skills and is able to be a representative of one’s organization.
NAD has altered the title from “Miss Deaf America Pageant” to “Miss Deaf America
Ambassador program”. It’s very true, as you know, the winner of the Miss Deaf America
title travels all over the nation, giving presentation, being the pulse of NAD,
empowering youth, educating Americans about The deafness. All of the above fits the terms, “ambassador”
Now, the Miss Deaf Colorado Ambassador program is not just a beauty contest. The
Ambassador program is an event in which young deaf ladies of Colorado display their intelligence, talent, personality, poise, and self-confidence in their quest of the “Miss Deaf Colorado Ambassador” title. Above all, the position is a fine, dignified, and beautiful way to encourage young deaf ladies to become leaders of tomorrow! There is also opportunity to win cash prizes. The “Miss Deaf Colorado Ambassador” program is sponsored by the Colorado Association of the Deaf as a worthwhile to promote success and self-esteem in young deaf ladies.
Now, you don’t need to be tall, thin, or beautiful to participate. Anyone with a leadership
quality can join!
If you are interested to participate in this program and represent Colorado at the National Association of the Deaf. “Miss Deaf America Ambassador’, please click this link for an application form. www.MDCAP.wordpress.com
After approval from the CAD Board, Daisy Bravo has been appointed as the new Miss CAD Ambassador Program Manager. She will start in her new role on March 14, 2011.
If you are interested in getting involved with this program, please contact Daisy via email at: atlarge2@cadeaf.org.
Welcome to your new role as Miss CAD Ambassador Program Manager, Daisy!

Background "Supporting members" is a new membership category, approved by the CAD membership on August, 2010. Supporting members may voice opinions at CAD meetings and in CAD publications, but can neither vote nor hold office.
Action The CAD board recommended that the membership dues/fee for supporting members be $1.00 per year.
Result CAD members voted to to approve the CAD board's recommendation. We will put "Supporting member" application forms on the website,
General Officer (GO) position
Background As approved by CAD members, also on August, 2010, the GO, a paid position, will function in the capacity of an executive officer under the direction and supervision of the CAD board.
Action The CAD board recommended rescinding this position.
Result CAD members voted against the board's recommendation. So we plan to hire a GO this coming June.
I appointed four CAD members (Ody Allen, David Anthony, Larry Pike, and Eldon Ragland) to serve on the GO core committee to draw up the job description and other recommendations to present to the CAD board no later than 1 May 2011. Eldon Ragland is the contact person of this committee. If you want to share your comments, ideas, opinions, suggestions about hiring
for this position, you can email him your comments, etc. His email address is <atlarge4@cadeaf.org>.

Hello. This is Angie Lawson. I recently presented on substance abuse issues at the CAD Annual Meeting. Thank you all again so much for giving me the time at your Annual Meeting to discuss this very important topic with you. I really appreciated all of the comments and feedback I received. That information will help the Daylight Project to develop guidelines for serving deaf and hard of hearing individuals, and it will inform training for providers.
As requested, I am sending some additional information about the Daylight Project. You can find information about the Daylight Project at: <http://www.csi-policy.org/daylight/index.htm>. In addition, a visual organizational chart is attached. There are a few abbreviations on the organizational chart. MHCD stands for the Mental Health Center of Denver, and FTE is full time employee. We are now in the process of creating a vlog that describes the Daylight Project. Once that is available, I can send the link.
Thank you again for your feedback and time. I really appreciated it! Please feel free to contact me at <mailto:angielawson22@gmail.com> with any questions.

COUNT DOWN TO DEAF AWARENESS WEEK 2010
By Eldon L. Ragland <pgrep@cadeaf.org>, Chair, CAD Deaf Awareness Week 2010 Committee
PLANNING FOR DEAF AWARENESS WEEK 2010
The Colorado Association of the Deaf (CAD) will host Deaf Awareness Week (DAW) celebrations this year from 25 September through 2 October 2010.
The primary goal of DAW is to offer week-long series of informational, educational, and social opportunities that will open doors for increased community collaboration and communication between our hearing coworkers, neighbors, friends, family members - and ourselves, leading to better understanding of abilities and capabilities of deaf Coloradans and of deaf culture and heritage in our state.
Most events will be interpreted in both sign and spoken language as needed, and with live captioning.
Several exhibitors are scheduled to be on hand during the opening day celebration. There will be children's activities, proclamations by dignitaries, and community awards.
The DAW theme will be announced at a later date, as will locations of various events.
Contest: DESIGN A LOGO FOR DEAF AWARENESS WEEK 2010!
Here’s the scoop: If you're a designer, an illustrator, a sketch artist, or a generally creative person, consider designing the Deaf Awareness Week 2010 logo!
What can you come up with to visually represent the Rocky Mountains? The State of Colorado? And incorporate "DAW" and "2010" - or "Deaf Awareness Week 2010" - and "Colorado"? Maybe a formal system of hand gestures on the Denver skyscrapers? Or on a Colorado peaks and plains image?
To allow more people to participate, we'll hold a DAW 2010 logo contest and let our Deaf Awareness Week 2010 committee members vote for the best one.
If your design is chosen as the "official" CAD/DAW 2010 logo, it will appear on hundreds of T-shirts, on web sites receiving millions of hits, and on all printed material preceding and during the actual week-long event in September 2010.
Cities and communities in the state of Colorado may use this logo. Also, local DAW organizers may incorporate the "official" CAD/DAW logo in creating their own logos to represent their location, event, or community.
The rules
You must incorporate the words "DAW" (or "Deaf Awareness Week") and "2010" and "Colorado” into your design.
Your logo will have no pornographic or profane images.
Your logo has to look okay printed in black and white. You can use color; just make sure that turning it 'grayscale' won’t ruin it, since all the printed matter will be in black and white. (Bear in mind that every extra color makes the T-shirts more costly!)
You have until 28 February 2010 midnight MST to submit your logo idea.
The decision of the CAD/DAW 2010 committee will be final.
Logos will be officially entered into the contest with the delivery of a .jpg or .png or .pdf to pgrep@cadeaf.org no later than midnight MST on 28 February 2010.
If you’re working on a logo and want feedback, feel free to email your ideas to Daisy Bravo or to me. If you have some good ideas but can’t draw to save your life, email your ideas to Daisy Bravo or to me, and maybe another community member will like your suggestion enough to draw it.
